Why Distance Sensors?

When compared to other forms of localization (such as odometry or drive encoders), distance sensors are an absolute form of localization. Odometry and drive encoders tend to drift or slip and loose positions over time relative to its start, distance sensors however, rely on real time measurements.

  • Sensors are very small and can easily be incorporated into any robot design

  • Most ultrasonic sensors can be bulk read to reduce loop frequency

That being said, we don't recommend distance sensor localization being the only form of localization on your robot. Rather, it works great when being used to reset the position of drive encoders or odometry. Additionally, it can be used to spontaneously calculate the position of the robot during the tele-op period!

Check the Sensors Recommendations page for some of the sensors we recommend!
